King Hrothgar's Biography
King Hrothgar is the ruler of
Herot and has experienced troubles with Grendel and his evil ways. The King had
no joy after Grendel attacked the village of Herot and beleived that this wasn't
going to be the end of Grendel. Hrothgar then paid Beowulf and some warriors to
fight off Grendel, when he returned, to resolve the blood fued. The King is old
in age by the time Grendel comes to Herot, but he used to be the mighty warrior
of his time. Hrothgar showers Beowulf with rewards for all of his feats and
magnificiant duties. There are many contoversies to whether Hrothgar was a
reliable king towards Herot or a coward. This is because Hrothgar delt with
Grendel's comings for 12 years and couldn't do anything about it, which made
people think he was a coward. Others beleive he was a reliable king towards
Herot because he was attatched to the village even though he couldn't stop
Grendel and stuck with his people everyitme he came until the end.
Quotes:
"So Herot stood empty, and
stayed deserted for years, twelve winters of grief for Hrothgar, king of the
Danes, sorrow heaped at his door." (p.22, lines
61-63)
" Hrothgar, their Lrod, sat joyless in
Herot, a mighty prince mourning the fate of his lost friends and companies."
(p.22, lines 44-46)
