The Vicious Battle!
The battle that gave Beowulf more fame was the battle against Grendel's Mother. Grendel's Mother lived in the bottom of the lake, anything that went to the very bottom she killed or took. She didn't care what it was. One day Beowulf showed up to kill her. "She welcomed him with her claws, Clutched at him savagely but could not harm him," (Pg. 40, 678-679). She took him back to her place to kill him there. Beowulf soon woke up from the long swim down. Even though he was scratched up and bleeding, he was not seriously injured from her attack.
Beowulf regained some of his strength through anger, and attacked Grendel's Mother. But Grendel's Mother leaps at him and sits on his stomach, so Beowulf cannot move. She grabbed her knife and aimed it right at his heart, but the mail he was wearing on his chest dulled the knifes tip. She stabbed him over and over again. Although, the knife's tip was dulled.
"Then he saw hanging on the wall, a heavy Sword, hammered by giants, strong And blessed by their magic," (Pg. 41, 633-635). Beowulf knew that, so he got away from her grasp and leaped for the sword. Before she could react to anything, the hilt of the sword was in his hands. By the time she stood up the blade of the sword was swung right at her neck. Beowulf felt the bone break at the force. Her body fell limp to the floor. Lifelessly!
Beowulf was still angry, even after he killed her. But he only did it to become more famous. While she fought for self-defence, and to avenge her only son. Although, now she lay dead, while Beowulf is victorious!
