Fate vs. Free Will
Free will is something a person has control over. Fate is what awaits someone, based upon the choices that he or she makes. We have a part in our fate by making choices, but in the sense that God has a hand in our fate as we make choices with His will in mind. Personally, I feel that while God loves us unconditionally and wants what is best for us, he allows us to have the choice to follow the teachings of his son or not. He never stops loving us, but our fate is left in our hands. Using his word to guide us allows us to choose the path we take, leading us to the fate that God knows we will come to, but at the same time giving us the option of doing what we want to do. Our fate is what is bond to happen to us while free will is something we control that can sometimes change our fate. Beowulf's fate is what led him to fight Grendel and Grendel's mother. Fate played a huge part in Beowulf's life, without fate Beowulf would of never lived as long as he did. Fate was on Beowulf's side when he fought those sea monters, Grendel and Grendel's mother."A monster seized me, drew me swiftly toward the bottom, swimming with it's claws tight in my flesh. But fate let me find it's heart with my sword; hack myself free (lines 311-313)". But, when Beowulf fought the dragon we began to see what happens when fate isn't on his side. This just shows how much of a role fate played in the this novel. "And for the first time in his life that famous prince fought with fate against him, with glory denied him (lines 723-725)".
